Overview:
This home, originally built in 1951, was very traditional in design with small, dark spaces and a “choppy” floor plan. It was a beautiful “before” home with good bones, but just not the new homeowner’s taste. The new homeowner wanted a more open floor plan, lots of natural light and a more contemporary flair.
A full bath at the rear of the home was removed and a wall was taken down to create the new living room where the outdoor terrace used to be. Vast glass doors reaching up to the new 12’ ceiling were installed to bring in lots of natural light, and a 6’ linear fireplace serves as a dramatic focal point in the space.
The kitchen was completely gutted. The window above the kitchen sink was enlarged to flood the space with natural light. Lacquered kitchen cabinets, new oak hardwoods and updated appliances were installed.
A downstairs bedroom right off the entryway was converted into a master closet, and the master bathroom was completely refaced. In the master bedroom, a new, larger window was installed to bring in more natural light and trim was added to the ceiling. The original laundry room located beside the kitchen was moved to the former master closet. The space was converted into a wet bar and can be easily accessed through the kitchen and new living room during entertaining.
To continue the transition from traditional to modern and contemporary, funky light fixtures were installed throughout and the overall color scheme was changed to cool grays and whites. Outside, the backyard was extended to add a limestone patio and covered porch. A small putting green was also added. The end result is a beautiful, modern home that perfectly fits the new homeowner’s style and taste.
