The clients wanted more storage and a larger shower but they wanted much more than a place to bathe. They wanted a room that had the calm healing qualities of a spa in a high end boutique hotel.
The existing bathroom was that of a typical development. It was resale driven to meet the bottom line of a spec house. It had no details that were inspiring or worth salvaging. The colors were forward and contrasting. The room was loud. The floor plan needed to be squared off as a clipped corner had been added for interest and was dated.
First, axes were established to give the layout peace. Receding colors were chosen to quiet the space visually and the proportions of every element were elongated and simplified. Great care was taken with each detail to create a seamless flow from ceiling to wall to cabinet to floor. The elements could only whisper if our goals were to be met. The large frosted glass window adds an ethereal hazy quality while providing more natural light. The concrete counter top is floated off the wall as if to tip toe across the room, making it necessary to hang its custom hand made mirror from the ceiling. Restraint was exercised in every choice that was made. Details edited to this level require excellent craftsmanship. Even the doors were finished by hand with chemicals and waxes rather than traditional stains.
The final result is
nothing shouts. The room pulls you in, calms your mind and sends you off to a better day. Storage is abundant in cabinets built flush in the new furred out wall. The room is poised and graceful in its silence. Sometimes all we need is less. After all, where there is too much, something is missing.
