The owners of this historical home desired an outdoor space that would allow them to enjoy their private backyard. The new porch layout allowed the client to have separate areas for dining as well as seating/lounging areas. The goals were to create a covered/protected space in their back yard to relax and enjoy outdoor dining, add an expanded outdoor footprint while maintaining the historical integrity of their home by using complimentary materials to the existing features of the home and, bring the outdoors into their finished spaces. Existing conditions were an uncovered patio that left no protection from the elements or any architectural interest from the rear yard, the layout of the patio had no separate areas for dining and seating, and lastly the slate patio was in disrepair and desperate need of some attention. Solutions were to the standing seam metal roof, brick foundation and slate tile floor compliments the existing historical details of the home and blend seamlessly to lead one to believe that this was an original detail of the home. The beaded ceiling coupled with the custom screen panels offer unique touches that set this porch apart from a standard porch addition and the recessed cans, which are on a dimmer switch that allow the homeowner to control the level of desired lighting, along with the ceiling fans gave this porch a truly finished feeling space. The result is a wonderful expansion to the historical home that can be used as an escape from the monotony of everyday life and allow the client to bring the outside into their home.
