The owners of this beautiful home wanted to open up their dark confined kitchen into the equally dark adjoining den and make the two cramped rooms into one large open bright, warm, sensible yet functional space. The goals were to, create a larger more inviting space, brighten up the existing floor to ceiling pine paneling, keep finishes consistent with the rest of the home, while updating much needed features. Some of the existing conditions were: dark and dated pine paneling in kitchen and den, kitchen closed off from den causing the rooms to feel confined and oversized fireplace and hearth dominating the hindered den. The solution was: The existing kitchen finishes were removed along with a wall separating the kitchen from the adjoining den as well as an oversized peninsula that cut-off traffic flow between the two spaces. The large fireplace and brick hearth in the den was removed and replaced with a new custom, built-in wall unit to add much needed storage and along with two windows to bring in more natural light to the newly opened space. The existing pine paneling & wainscoting was painted a clean, bright cream to make the space much brighter and warmer. Lastly, new custom made painted cabinets were installed along with high end built-in appliances were added to complement the existing high end finishes of the home. The result is a larger, much more inviting and brightened space by creating one open flow floor plan as opposed to two smaller spaces yet still keeping the warmth of the rest of the home.
