The porch floor and support structure were completely replaced with new treated wood which has a longer lifespan. The support structure was difficult to replace because we had to strategically install temporary supports as we made repairs in one area at a time. The soffit was completely redone to bring back the original arch and acorn detailing. This proved to be a challenge because when the soffit was opened up, it was revealed that the structure was not up to todays standards. Basically, the porch roof was about to collapse. We had to rebuild the beams and then construct steel brackets to hold up the heavy arches and acorns. Arches were custom built to exactly replicate dimensions and radiuses according to the historic pictures provided. We were also surprised to find damaged areas to the roof, roof sheathing, and roof rafters. We later found that this was caused by a downed tree during hurricane Hugo and subsequent repairs were not up to quality standards. These elements were not only brought up to normal standards, but were correctly improved to historical standards. The wooden columns were replaced with synthetic polymer columns, but historical details on the original columns were replicated. Many of the original historic products, such as the acorn details were completely restored because were weathered and had 200 years of scaling paint. -Photos courtesy of Neffworks Photography
